The concept of recycling vinyl is simple . . . just like the medium it fueled, powered . . . Radio.  Radio was simply a vehicle, a delivery system for the world to receive information and be entertained.  1965 - 1985 were considered the greatest years in radio . . . not to be confused with the Golden Years of Radio . . . before TV (early 1900s).   During the 60s, 70s and 80s Radio was King . . . The VR2 Show celebrates these great years with the music that filled the airwaves and impacted our lives in so many ways . . . We'd love to keep our show relevant, fun and interesting . . . please share your ideas, memories and passions for this medium and the music that made it great.  VR2 is Vintage Rock Radio

I love our new approach to the radio show and the
reality is spot on...WE ARE JUST PLAYING RECORDS!.
The very nature of vinyl appreciation requires recycling and it's perhaps, one of the greatest habits I ever acquire as a child. So, here's the question and I'm wondering "are kids today missing something fundamental because technology has changed the delivery and habits of acquiring great music?" I'm not interested in bashing technology because, afterall I'm blogging.
I love my Mac and my I phone.

Stop and think about it, there was a time when "playing records" meant literally making time to save your earnings, and physically finding the time to go to the store and purchase a record. This was perhaps, one of the greatest repetitious experiences of my childhood. Buying the record of my choice with my money on my time and on my dime.
Something fulfilling happens when you can physically make the purchase, touch the record and hold it in your hands! Even now, when I hold an LP or a 45, there's that roundness that feels like nothing else ..it just feels so RIGHT!. The left hand knows exactly what the right hand is doing the tension between them allows you to experience the balance, symmetry, the weight!
Visually, the color of the black vinyl with the round label defining the name of the artist, the speed of the record, the names of the producers, and the name of the record label. It all had an order to it, like the dewey decimal system in a the library. Yes, I'm that old!

My favorite part of all was the anticipation of taking your newly purchased vinyl, putting it on the turntable. The pure excitement and crackling sound of the needle against the record giving way to the greatest moment....the MUSIC! The wonderful endless music heard on the radio or on your record player. Here it is all these many years and artists later and we're still watching that record spin on the turntable. We're still playing records and recycling the world's great radio years, '65 thru '85.
We want to know what you think, what is your vinyl experience, Please, tell us your story and let's recycle together!

I might be the luckiest woman in the world to have the greatest co-host in the world. I'm talking about
this past Saturday evening, both Mike and I witnessed at the Palace Theatre, Cleveland, Ohio the 16th Annual Music Masters Series, honoring one of the most influential singers in American music, the "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin.
It was by far, one of the greatest evenings of my life. Mike and I are absolute followers of Aretha's musical career.

Many of the VR2 listeners may remember that we hosted a heartfelt special about Aretha last year during her period of convalescence. The VR2 special about Aretha was our way of letting Aretha know how much we appreciate her music and how much we at VR2 truly care.

I am happy to say, "THE UNIVERSE WAS LISTENING! "
She looked amazing this past Saturday as she was presented with the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, received for her pioneering work as a recording artist, exemplifying the highest ideals and standards. Case Western Reserve University presented her with this honorary degree.

I have been reading for year's about different stars or actors receiving such a degree from a given University, but I have never actually been present
for this meritorious moment. WOW! There she was
right in front of me graciously receiving her honorary degree, Doctor Aretha Franklin!
I felt so thrilled and blessed to witness this
moment in time. Thank you Mike!
She has spent the last 50 years of her life creating and singing some of the most powerful recordings
in the history of music. Aretha has won the hearts of the music industry as the "Greatest female vocalist of all time."
Needless to say, it was a great night all part of the
American Music Master Arts Education event, presented by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and
Museum. The evening was filled with artists that
have been been featured here at VR2, each one of
them covering Aretha's greatest songs.
The night just kept getting better with performances from Jerry Butler, Dennis Edwards, Ron Isley, Cissey Houston, Chaka Khan and Mike
Farris to name a few. I spent the evening gasping for air as one
after another historic performers unfolded
their greatness for Mike, me and a packed Palace.

Thank You Mike, from the bottom of my heart,
I am forever grateful for your friendship and your
generous heart! Thanks Mike!

Mike and Chris,

I'll be in Palermo for what you call Thanksgiving Day, but other than the date there's no connection. But it will be a tasty evening:

This event, prepared inside the sunny and welcoming attic where Annamaria lives, is a unique occasion to discover the artistic and architectural wealth of the historical centre, living at the same time in the warmth of a true Sicilian family.

The love for her homeland and for good living has prompted our Cesarina to make herself an expert depositary of the culinary knowledge of the area, as well as a profound exponent of the many gastronomic expressions of the cookery of Palermo (from relatively simple notes that try to copy the Lords' table, successfully leading to tasty dishes, to the refined ancient Baronial symphonies).

The mixed fish appetizers are a tribute by Annamaria to her island with its fishing tradition.

The second course arrives at table, it's the Timballo del Gattopardo (timbale) : as widely described in a page of the famous novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa, it is prepared (strictly "sauceless" ) combining the caciocavallo from Ragusa and "abundant" quantities of chicken and veal meat.

The Caponata is served in its version with a basis of aubergine with apples and pumpkin , in which the Baronial kitchen foresaw the use, other than of vegetables and fruit, also of boiled small octopus or, in special cases, of medallions of lobster. It is all flavoured with a sauce of onion, celery, olives and capers, as in the aubergine variant.

The Cuscus di pistacchi , whose recipe is still now secret, was created in the monastery of the Spirito Santo of Agrigento and belongs to conventual cookery, almost exclusively devoted to sweets. The existence of three different types of Sicilian cookery gives reason to the fact that, before the advent of the Swiss pasticcerias, sweets were bought in the convents, through a revolving window that separated the buyer from the saleswoman, the nun!

In closing this not only just a culinary journey but also a trip through the history and the origins of an extraordinary and generous region, a rather particular meal-end is presented: the Pesche gelate di Brydone (ice peaches) , a very old recipe which recalls the 1770's "Journey through Sicilia and Malta".

Typical and Traditional Produce presented in this journey:

Capers from Pantelleria, Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Castelvetrano, Sausage from Sant'Angelo di Brolo,

pecorino cheese from Corleone, seasoned pecorino from San Giovanni, ricotta cheese of Valle d'Olmo

Wines : bianco: Principe di Corleone-Pinot Bianco (Pollara Monreale) rosso : Nero d'Avola (Cusumano)

'Tis the Season' for Peace On Earth and Good Will to men" Let's live that this Christmas Season. I was reading The Cleveland Plain Dealer on Sunday about Providence House, a respite for abused children,it is a crisis nursery that cares for children 24 hr to 90 days. The center is limited as to how many children it can care for and is in need of supplies, monetary donations, and volunteers. There are Providence houses in many cities and states so wherever you are please consider giving a baby or young child a chance at PEACE and Comfort. There are two little babies 2 and 4 Providence is caring for them at the center while their mother is dying of leukemia. Please remember that when we are deciding what we should have for Christmas dinner, what should I buy for Uncle Joe, or do we have to invite this person or that , there are children that are just hoping for safety. Let's share just a little of our own blessings this year.... VR2 PEACE 2 You...Merry Christmas.

Well, we are 17 days into 2012 and have we stuck to our resolutions. I am bragging I have definitely stuck to mine. My First resolution was : I will not make any resolutions, Number 2: I will not be stressed this year trying to keep my resolutions, ' cause I did not make any resolutions. Number 3: I will definitely listen to VR2 and that doesnt have to be a resolution cause I do that each week and over and over during the week.

As the golden throats of the host and co host says "The universe is listening" and " VR2 Peace to You" I wish you Peace and Happiness and I know that the Universe is going to hear that,

O.K. back in the day, that would be the "sixties" music lovers either liked bubblegum surfer music, or if you were like me you were a motown connoisseur. The dress for guys was black leather jackets and greased back hair hence the term " Greasers" . Ladies in that classification wore black skirts hiked above their knees, many being sent home from school follow the "dress code" . Now,the other group were considered " Surfers" this group loved groups like the" Beach Boys" . They dressed in bright colors wore "tennis shoes" and the girls were cheerleaders and dressed preppy and the guys wore striped tees. Looking back, I remember jumping back and forth between dress styles but my music was mostly 'MoTown" Stay Tuned , next blog will feature memories of " Leo's Casino" , and the awesome groups and performers that this writer remembers as if it was yesterday, and what a challenge to learn the "Temptation Strut". If any of you are from my era, join us with your memories.

In Cleveland, Ohio known for being the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , the sixties and seventies was a hot spot for Concerts by the Greats like The Temptations, The Four Tops, The O'Jays, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Tom Jones, Franki Valli and The Four Seasons . And opening acts of new performers like Gladys Knight and the Pips , opening act for The Four Tops.

My most exciting moment was when I was invited to see my first concert, The Tempting Temptations, you know them the gentlemen with the glistening tuxedos, the dance moves that all the teens were doing in dance clubs everywhere. OMG, I was going to Leo's Casino the Club where all the Motown acts came to croon.
Who would have thought, I was going to see them in person. I went out bought the slinkiest black dress, the highest heels , a black lambs wool jacket and we were off. The excitement continued to build, but the dreaded fear : what if I could not get into the club, I was only 17 and would I get all the way to the eastside of Cleveland only to be turned away at the door? My date, who was much older and of legal clubbing age just slipped in with no problem, However; my girlfriend and her date, who both were way beyond the legal age were stopped and given the third degree. That made the evening even more fun, I was taken for older, a ruse, only a 17 year old would think was cool. Those days have gone by the wayside, but I digress.

Leo's Casino was a nightclub by all senses of the word, Dinner tables all around the stage, Ladies dressed to the nines and the men were in sharkskin suits, some in wild colored tuxedos. The excitement was all around the large but cozy club. Then the lights dimmed and the intro of familiar Temptations songs introducing the headliners. The room rocked and the crowd sang along with songs like " My Girl" Since I lost my Baby" . What a night. I can still see them with their arms swinging in cadence and their dance steps all together and even today when I hear their music I swoon. Ok, VR2 hosts .... Hint Hint how 'bout a Temptations Tribute.

My heart is so heavy today. What an absolutely fabulous woman,
Etta James, one of my most favorite Blues/R&B singers. She was said to have been named "the most famous of Blues Singers" by producer Jerry Wexler and she stole countless hearts with her compelling, grab your heart soulful hit, "At Last".
Her memory is etched on my soul and though I never met her,
she influenced my spirit and inspired me to remember, to always
remember, never give up, stay the course and no matter what
demons you struggle with, you can overcome them and experience
life's possibilities and blessings. My hand to heaven.....Etta, thank
you...you will be sorely missed! Chris Krause

"Stormy Weather" is a great choice, Katia, she struggled with
drugs during the time of recording that great record, but she finally
broke through all of that and her voice just tells her story, so completely soulful grabs my heart, it's like every song she sings,
I know her, I know her by the passion in her voice, I have always
thought that her voice was a gift from God, he had plans for her
and she touched the hearts of many people. Yes, may she rest
in peace, eternal peace, and I will honor her by singing her
songs and sharing her music!

Does anyone remember their first record player, mine was a little suitcase with a turntable, I thought I had died and gone to rock n roll heaven, My first 45 (for those of you tooo young to know what a 45 rpm record was it was a small circle with a hole in the middle and had two sides and my allowance every week went to buying 99cent records each week, ' Travelling Man" by Rick Nelson , then came "Where The Boys Are" by Connie Francis. Okay, so now you know that not only was my record player and antique but I may be "Travelling" toward that title soon.......Chris I can relate to your record case but mine was red to match my record player. Oh , when things were so simple and truly "Green"

Mike and I are deeply heavy hearted over the news of Don Cornelius's death. To all our fans and his family and loved ones, we offer our heartfelt sympathy. Don Cornelius leaves behind a legacy whose contributions broadened the culture and awareness of African Americans and the music industry!
He paved the way for countless entertainers, artists and many generations of viewers and music greats.

I just had this conversation with Mike. VR2 has been doing a Don Cornelius Tribute to Soul Train over the last 5 VR2 Shows. Mike and I are huge admirers of Don Cornelius and Soul Train! Today, before the news of Don's death, I gave Mike a cool archived photo of Don Cornelius for our VR2 Studio. We were both so excited, it came with papers of authenticity and it's a great photo of Don, from back in the day!
We are completely aware of Don's contribution to the music industry as a pioneer and owner of a Nationally Syndicated Television Show that introduced to the world uniquely talented artists and musicians! In truth, it's because of Don Cornelius and Soul Train that I learned the dance moves that inspired me to let go and simply dance! His show touched both Mike's and my life and filled us both with great joy and happiness.

I feel certain Soul Train had a profound influence in merging cultures and inspiring possibilities of racial peace.
There are so many artists etched in my memory from Soul Train. I always felt that because I enjoyed the show as much as I did that I was somewhat obligated to bring the "black culture" into my white world somehow, I felt obligated to share my positive experience of Soul Train into my world. I couldn't really do it through clothing, I came from a large family and though the Soul Train clothes were cool....my family couldn't afford fashion.....we were broke! It wasn't my hair, my hair was always poker straight and the color of my skin was far too milk white to consider any Soul Train make-up tips so, the only thought left for me was through dance, I could dance like the Soul Train dancers all day long!
Interesting to note, I grew up in a culture of racial prejudice experiencing the black culture through inappropriate comments and blatant racial slurs. I didn't really understand why African Americans were so different because in truth while I watched Soul Train as a child, I knew that I was cut from the same cloth as every dancer on the show. It was Soul Train that gave me my first true look into the African American culture. I could learn first hand from watching and observing the show and make decisions about the young black teenagers what life in their world might be all about.
I never missed a show. My heart was always filled with the love of Motown but when I watched Soul Train my week was complete!
I would walk away every Saturday feeling energized and cooler than when I sat down. I was like a sponge taking it all in, every move, every song, every artist, every Saturday. I was always excited because in my minds eye, I was there! I was part of Soul Train.

So, with heavy hearts, tonight we say "Good bye" to Don Cornelius and tomorrow we continue to tell his story, share his influence, and keep his pioneering spirit alive through VR2, Vintage Rock Radio...and in the words of Don Cornelius, "You come on and run with us next week on these same stations and you can bet your last money, it's gonna be a stone gas, honey. I'm Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace, and soul!"

What a beautiful tribute Mike and Chris. All I can add is that though I was not dancer out in the public, Soul Train gave me a chance to dance the night away in the privacy of my home. I loved the music and watching the performers of all the "Soul" that I adored.

My sympathies to all , especially his loved ones. I know that " love, peace, and soul" will continue on in his memory . Especially, on the VR2 Show..... Peace Out......

Gary, in response to your question in the last blog after the passing of Don Cornelius, certainly a legend in our lifetime.....your question asked about losing legends and are there new legends to replace them? I have a one word response to your question, ADELE! Time will play out the truth of this possibility but for me, no one contemporary artist out there affects me the same way Aretha does better than ADELE! I am not saying that Aretha, who has earned her title as "Queen of Soul" and whose musical genius, influence and contributions over the last fifty years could or should be measured against Adele, that is NOT my point.
ADELE's voice reaches all the way to my bones and the only artist
that affects me as closely is Aretha Franklin.

The world of music has been longing for a contemporary artist to
sweep us off our feet with a voice so dynamic and powerful that
the audience feels and responds to the unadulterated passion in her vocal ability like ADELE! Her voice is an absolute gift from heaven!
If you go deep and have an interest in ADELE you discover a young
woman who is driven to sing and has no desire to showcase her
talent with choreographed dance moves or provocative fashions.
Her true personality and passion is completely raw and exposed
through her amazing soulful, passionate voice, NOT her diva attire!
She simply and beautifully just "sings"!

To her greatness, Her album "21" has achieved critical acclaim
and should secure for her, Album of the Year at the upcoming
Grammy's scheduled for February 21st.
In addition to best album, she is up for Song of the Year "Rolling In the Deep" written by herself as the songwriter and probably walk away with both Song of the Year and Record of the Year!
If that isn't enough, she is also gracing the Pop category for
her remarkable song titled "Someone Like You" up for Best Pop Solo Performance. I am her #1 fan and will be glued to the television Grammy night!

She's young 24 ish, and in this moment , her
album "21" has achieved status of #1 for over 18 week running probably bumping Madonna's record for longest top of album chart
for female!

So I encourage everyone to watch this young woman, she is
an amazing singer we could be watching a legend in the making.
Afterall, it takes the unfolding of time of the power of the Universe to create tomorrow's legends!
VR2 Peace 2 U!

Well, Chris, musical singing legends may not be extinct, I agree.
As for Adele, if I may speak from my personal niche, she has done one of the greatest covers of a Dylan song ever, and her video of this cover overwhelming drenches the viewer in what Dylan biographer Anthony Scaduto coined, the "sour emptiness of love" found in Dylan lyrics.

Thank for your question, Gary . . . Of course . . . however, in my opinion, the legendary pioneers of the music industry, who forge the way for today's stand out talent, cannot merely be replaced, it just isn't possible. Most of today's artists, are simply beneficiaries of the genius efforts of the artists who preceded them. Today's technology like the internet, social media, etc. has cluttered the industry with many sensationalize and hyped-up talent that would otherwise, be lost in the shuffle. The early rock era pioneers didn't have the luxury and access to modern day media tools such as, search engines, blogs, podcasts, internet, and other forms of "new media" to help them gain exposure, acceptance or fame. They had to rely on true talent to be discovered. So, I would venture to say that back in the day, acts like Justin Bieber wouldn't be appearing at the Apollo Theatre. My greatest hope is that someday, modern technology will be designed and used to uncover tomorrow's "true" superstars, like the ones brought to us by the legendary, Don Cornelius.

Gary, it is a great cover, to "Make You Feel My Love", when I first saw this video I felt it was reminiscent of my first marriage....and again I say, her voice is captivating. In the lyrics of Dylan and the disposition of the video, she looks like she's "toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair."...but sometimes truth just takes you there! In this video she's in tremendous emotional pain,
probably required criteria to becoming a legend!

WHAT, HAS THE WHOLE WORLD GONE MAD! I AM SO TERRIBLY TROUBLED BY WHITNEY HOUSTON'S DEATH!

The whole sordid story is yet to be told....completely....it's all
unfolding before our eyes. She was so wonderfully uplifting during
her early career. I remember like it was yesterday her first song
"How Will I Know". The video was filled with vivid colors as she
danced down brightly painted corridors and sang with expressions
that were fresh, happy and fun! To my recollection the song was produced by Narada Michael Walden, written by George Merrill & Shannon Rubicon, the same young songwriters who wrote the
amazing song titled "Waiting For a Star to Fall", and singing the background vocals on her first song "How Will I Know" was her
mom...Cissy Houston. To her family, her Aunt, Dionne Warwick,
her Godmother, Aretha Franklin, her sweet mother, Cissy Houston friends and loved ones, both Mike and I offer our deepest sympathy from VR2...and to Whitney, may you finally find eternal "Peace!".....and to all our fans remember, "the Universe is Listening!"

“ In One Moment Of Time” Our “Greatest Love” has slipped away from us. Unfortunately, she did not feel the love. Drugs were a major factor with her struggle with life, whether or not they were the actual cause the actual physical death of Whitney Houston. Sympathies go out to her beautiful daughter, mother, aunt, Godmother, as and friends. Only God knows what else was behind her death. But nonetheless, she is gone way to soon.

What about the everyday people. The ones that are not in the public eye who slip away without the assistance of the news media. The mother of a baby that meets with her supplier and overdoses , a family is destroyed. A young man on his way to his future gets a fix that ends his promising future. A baby boomer who is lost as to where he is going with the rest of his life connects with a heroine dealer and loses his life before his time. How many families are grieving the loss by the murderers we call “ Drugs” the latest craze of which is heroine. Are their losses any less meaningful.

How do we stop this horrible disease- Addiction. When a star like Michael Jackson or Whitney loses the battle with drugs the airwaves are filled with tributes, and memorials. When and everyday battle is lost a family is devastated and left to mourn in private. I wonder does the media coverage romanticize drug use and death by drugs. None of us will ever know. To what depths must a life tumble, to live life only for the next fix.

Rest in Peace, Whitney and all the lives that have been taken by this Epidemic. We love you.

Farewell to Davy Jones and to his family and friends Mike and I offer our condolences and blessings!

I just never really think about it. I ‘m always surprised when anyone I know
passes on. Not that I actually knew Davy Jones, because I didn’t. Still, I’m always
surprised when someone passes to realize how he or she affected my life!

I think it would be fair to say as a young kid, I had a crush on him. My girlfriends
older sister had a teen magazine and in the middle was a pull out poster of
Davy Jones. I liked it so much I took my allowance and bought one for myself.
I didn’t hang it in my room for the longest time because I thought my mother
wouldn’t allow me to buy it much less hang a poster of a teenager on my wall.
So I hid the poster and the magazine under my mattress.

One day I came home from school, sheets changed, and the poster was hanging
on my bedroom wall and the magazine was placed on my pillow! After that, there was no looking back, it was official I had a crush on Davy Jones!

The Monkees took the world by storm and captured the hearts of young girls
all around the globe. They sold over 65 million records and had 4 consecutive number one hits! Yes, they could be referred to as music legends.

I watched every episode of their TV series, The Monkees and I was deeply disappointed when it was no longer available.

Davy Jones was a star before the Monkees. He won an Emmy for his performance
As the Artful Dodger in the Broadway production, Oliver. In truth, the original television pilot for the Monkees was based on his history and then evolved to become an absolute rip-off of the Beatles movie A Hard Days Night. It was a successful television attempt to capture the hearts of Americas crazed squealing girls, swept away by Beatle mania!

The Monkees, included four young musicians and performers, Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones.

The television show lasted for only two seasons I believe it was from ’66 to ’68. The show’s history includes names behind it like Don Kirshner, Boyce & Hart with music written by Carol King, Neil Diamond and Mike Nesmeth, it was bound for success.

So, again with a heavy heart Mike and I say good-by to my first crush, Davy Jones
And to his family and friends we offer our condolences. To Davy Jones, may you rest in peace and thank-you for giving us fun, happy, silly and joyous childhood memories!
Peace to all and remember….the Universe is Listening,
Mike & Chris, VR2

I agree Chris, it is so hard to fathom the loss of someone we are close too, someone we have watched climb the charts, or just acquaintances. It seems that so many have taken the big journey home in the past several months. We are so lucky to have them on film and music media that we can keep them close to us. Maybe we should consider doing that with all of our loved ones, then when we want to hear their voices and laughter once more we have these great memories.. Rest in Peace Davy Jones, join the others that have paid their dues and are reaping the rewards.

i loved your story about the poster, Most importantly how intuitive your mother was to know what you loved. " That's what friends are for", ( and mother's especially) to coin a phrase /

Wondering what to do with the stacks of old vinyl records that are collecting dust. If you dont want to pick up a back a record player back in the day stereo phono, consider melting them down and making bowls to keep mail, fruit, candy, whatever your imagination can conjure up. And that's my green recycling idea for today. Happy Recycling .

It was exciting to attend the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony 2012!

Let’s just say it like it is…..Cleveland has a passion, and an absolute love for Rock n Roll. NorthEast Ohio knows how to appreciate the artists of rock who have graced our city and our hearts for over sixty years.

The natives of Cleveland met their beloved rock stars with welcoming cheers, unabashed enthusiasm, and an obvious appreciation for the Legends of Rock n Roll!
Many of the Inductees and legends stayed at the Ritz Carlton and the Renaissance, downtown Cleveland. They were met by excited fans waiting for a look or an autograph.
I had the opportunity to meet several artists during the evening and a few I met while walking the red carpet.
Several stars chose not to come in through the red carpet entrance,
and a good dozen came in through the side door of Public Hall. Those who chose to enter with the crowd on the red carpet included David Arquette , Darlene Love, Alice Cooper, Mr. Funk himself, George Clinton, and George Voinovich, just to name a few!
I had the privilege of walking the red carpet at the Rock n Roll Induction Ceremony. My greatest discovery was not the rock stars that I met throughout the evening, my greatest discovery was in fact, the fans of Rock in our great city. Cameras flashing, and a cheering crowd, is a wonderful welcoming moment given to the stars by the fans of Cleveland.
The energy was infectious and though I’m not a star, the crowd surely made me feel like one. I found myself giving the “queens wave” on the outside, and on the inside, I kept proudly thinking…..WELCOME TO CLEVELAND, WE ARE THE ROCK N ROLL CAPITOL OF THE WORLD!

Descending the marble staircase at Public Hall
brought you directly into the cocktail party which took place before the Induction Ceremony. The room was simply elegant/chic with crystal chandeliers hanging in every direction. Each chandelier was trimmed with white feathers. The bar was decorated with beaded crystal curtains and white satin scalloped draping from floor to ceiling. This area is typically the Corporate area, where business meetings are held. However, the standard business décor was transformed, like magic, into a crystal/feather/chic night club filled with the excitement of induction
attendees toasting and celebrating the evening.

The party continued into several rooms, each presenting a featured color allowing the attendees to stroll from room to room, enjoying the “red” room, the “blue” room etc. Food stations highlighted each room with sumptuous cuisine boasting delicious choices of large chilled shrimp, chef carving tenderloin, fresh sushi, grilled vegetables and a rich variety of delectable dishes. The caterer of choice, Executive Caterers the exclusive caterers of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and the Convention Center. Executive Caterers made the city proud!

Eight was the magic hour to ascend the marble staircase to Public Auditorium. The crowd couldn’t wait to get upstairs to their tables and find their seats. A sea of tables decorated the floor all the way to the Stage. The floor of public auditorium was set to hold over 100+ tables on different levels accommodating over 1,200 VIP attendees. In addition, the perimeter of Public Hall in the concert seating area
reached 6,000 people . The energy was intense as
the entire room was full to capacity with everyone anticipating the Inductions starting moment – Public Auditorium was packed
& Sold Out!

The crowd finally found their seats and tables and the party continued!

From the floor a crowd of hands held flashing cell phone arms stretched
high above their heads giving way to none other than Kid Rock. The line to be photographed with “Kid Rock” seemed to be an endless circle of
fans surrounding him.

The staging and the lighting filled the room with colorful lasers and gobos featuring the names of each star being inducted, Beastie Boys,
Donovan, Small Faces and the Faces, Guns N’Roses, the late Laura Nyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers , and the night was off to a good start.

I have several favorite moments throughout the evening, John Mellencamp’s induction of Donovan rings loud in my memory.
He spoke of how Donovan influenced him as a kid and inspired him to be a great musician. Bette Midler’s passion for Laura Nyro and her
teary-eyed moment when she spoke of Laura and the first time she
played her record and how she fell in love with her voice and her music. Laura was an inspiration for her many fans and she influenced Bette’s music throughout her career. It was a very touching and genuine induction. Bette encouraged all the young people in the audience to learn and listen to Laura Nyro’s music.
Smokey Robinson was eloquent. He conveyed his love for his fellow musicians and the bands that he honored. Darlene Love’s vocal performance of the Shirelle&rsqu

(Continued).....Darlene Love’s vocal performance of the Shirelle’s song “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”
was powerful and heartfelt. The song was written by Carol King who was on hand to induct her long time friend Don Kirshner. She spoke of his comprehensive influence over the Entertainment industry and praised his accomplishments. People came to the Induction Ceremony from all parts of the world dressed in gowns and tuxedos. Cleveland was gracious, proud and was equally applauded by the stars and entertainers.

It became clear to me how “Influence” plays a huge part in creating
great culture. Each star presenting or honored has truly left their
mark sharing their musical passion and their soul for future generations
to build on. Great example has tremendous influence.
Through the entire evening, I kept thinking how important our
work is at VR2, Mike and I tell the story of Rock n Roll and we play the music of Rock n Roll… music from ’65 thru ’85. Every artist who was
inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame made a record, vinyl, which was sold to the public and heard first on radios across the world.
VR2 recycles vinyl, we keep the songs alive, we play the records
and tell the story.
Radio is an intrinsic part of the music industry. VR2 is committed to preserving rock music heritage and radio culture for future generations. We are the gatekeepers and recyclers of great Radio and great Rock. We are proud to be part of the Cleveland Community.
VR2 - Vintage Rock Radio salutes Cleveland, the Rock n Roll Capitol of the World, and both Mike and I extend our congratulations to the 2012 Inductees of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and we applaud Rocks Greatest Legends!

VR2 Salutes Dick Clark – Music Pioneer & Legend!

This past week we all experienced the loss of a true TV Pioneer, Dick Clark. He was a legend in the television and
Music industry.

We look back and realize that he was only 26 years old
When he took over American Bandstand. The show became an after school staple to teenagers across America.
Dick hosted American Bandstand, the long running television dance show from 1956 to 1989, spinning the latest songs featuring teenagers dancing to top 40 music. Dick introduced Rock-n-Roll into homes and made it respectable! American Bandstand became the inspiration for many including legendary Don Cornelius and Soul Train.

His success continued showcasing 40 years with the highly celebrated Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve
The annual “Ball Drop” is etched in America’s Memory
forever!

He parlayed his dance show into other notable programs
Such as the $10,000 Dollar Pyramid, American Music Awards and the Golden Globes telecast.

Dick’s youthful good looks, which he maintained into his
70’s earned him the title of “the world’s oldest teenager”.
American Bandstand introduced a range of music giants
Such as Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Barry, Sam Cooke, the Supremes, Madonna and Michael Jackson just
to name a few.

So, again with a heavy heart Mike and I say good-bye to
Dick Clark and to his family, friends and fans we offer
our condolences.

At the end of every show, Dick gave his signature military
salute to all his viewers……with the bandstand music ringing as a backround, fingers to forehead…Mike and I respectfully “salute” America’s oldest teenager, the King of Music, Radio and TV!

Aretha, Aretha, Aretha! IS THERE ANY OTHER ARTIST?

To me, Aretha Franklin is a staple, an icon and a ballast
upon which every artist in the universe of music is measured.

I always start with Aretha!

Mike invited me to see with him the legendary Aretha
Franklin. She performed at the State Theatre in Cleveland
as part of the annual TRI-C JAZZFEST!

Her background orchestra showcased three talented singers,
24 pieces orchestra, percussionist, violins, trombones
and her son on lead guitar. It was a night of much anticipation
until finally, energy whirling high above the theatre, she appeared on stage to a standing ovation!

Her voice, as she thanked and applauded the audience, was
completely welcoming.

In her musical arrangements on her records she sings and talks
and can often be heard addressing you, the listener, with conversations in between her vocals. When she arrived on stage again, she converses with her audience in a manner that is so completely familiar and welcoming, you feel right at home. Her performance was warm and sincere and her vocals comforting!

The 40 foot screen hanging above the stage showcased
the cover of her latest album “A Woman Falling Out of Love”.
The cover finds Aretha looking beautiful, happy and
above all Healthy! (continued)…

The evening was filled with some of her greatest songs and
punctuated with her piano rendition, gospel moments, call and response vocals that insisted the audience sway, clap and sing! Aretha’s rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”,
reached all the way to her roots as the screen above her reflected photos of her father, C.L. Franklin a Revivalist preacher, her mother a gospel singer, her sister and her gospel
rich heritage.

Her performance of “Chain of Fools” was down and dirty and showcased 6 hot dancers dressed in red fringe skillful rhythmic edgy choreography that not only accentuated the music, but made you want to get up and dance!

Her background singers followed her every move and echoed
soulful, harmonious vocals. Wherever Aretha was on stage,
her singers were singing to and with Aretha and always facing her “Aretha”, the Queen of Soul!

Her performance was entertaining and filled with great Aretha
Moments. She reached across genres and history. She scatted, laughed, told jokes and applauded Cleveland for their support.
She reminisced about the early years and acknowledge the first venue in Cleveland where she performed in the early 60’s none
other than Cleveland’s historic Leo’s Casino! Aretha is a gracious, entertaining, talented legendary performer!

The evening was engaging and I am grateful to Mike for inviting me to another great memorable moment to live on
in my heart and VR2-Vintage Rock Radio!

Not to be forgotten by anyone, Aretha Franklin has earned her title in the music industry, acknowledge by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, reference her impact on the
Universe…the facts are amazing! (continued)

Aretha Franklin has charted more Top Forty singles –
forty-five in all, since 1961 – than any other female performer. To date she has made the R&B singles chart ninety-eight times, including twenty Number Ones. Franklin has also earned eighteen Grammy Awards, the most recent coming in 2007. In addition, she received the Kennedy Center Honor, she sang at the inaugurations of Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and she received the Presidential Medal of Honor from President George W. Bush. - (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.)

Aretha Franklin was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in l987. In November of 2011, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum honored Franklin
as the American Music Masters program, in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University. CWRU awarded her with an honorary doctorate of human letters.

Mike and I would like to thank Aretha for sharing her voice
and touching our hearts. We wish her tremendous Peace,
and Health. Mike & Chris VR2-Vintage Rock Radio

Peace,
Chris Krause

Hey! I just wanted to let everyone know about an awesome Street Festival happening this weekend!

The Hessler Street Fair is something I feel makes Cleveland the way it is and is just down right incredible. Amazingly it just so happens to be this weekend. If anyone is looking for something to do come check it out!

It is the 44th annual Street Fair. It originally began to save the fair back in 1969 from Case wanting to turn it into dorms and a parking lot.

As an adult I’ve been going to it since I could remember with my family and later with my friends. I make sure to go every year and each year seems to get better and better.

There’s food from all over Cleveland like Pizza BOGO, Algebra Teahouse, Smoked BBQ and so many more locally owned restaurants. There are tons of amazing bands that play such as Carlos Jones and the PLUS band, JiMiller Band, Gusti, Outlaws I and I and so much more. If you like the music on this radio station you’ll love the music down at Hessler. There are also tons of arts and crafts booths with amazing pieces of jewelry, artwork, and clothes that are bright and colorful and really get you in the mood for spring. It’s supposed to be warm this weekend so come check it out! It’s an event you won’t want to miss!

Check out the link below to see the bands playing, the arts and crafts and the food that will be offered! Or check it out on Facebook to learn more about it.

The Hessler Street Fair is for everyone who enjoys music, delicious food, amazing art, loving people and a good time.

Henry LoConti, the man who started the Cleveland Agora and built
the groundwork for Rock Music of all genres has passed on,
he was my friend, my boss, my hero and in my heart he introduced me
to the experience of a lifetime....the magic of Rock & Roll!
simply stated,

Hank LoConti changed my life.

I met my husband at the Agora where I worked with Hank and Buddy. They were the machines behind Rock and Roll. At a time when we had two newspapers, the Cleveland Press and the Plain Dealer, they taught me the business of rock promotion and the art of Talent Buying. Both Hank and Buddy were the masters, they had it down, along with WMMS they changed the rock landscape of Northeast Ohio. It was a truly amazing time for Cleveland as the Legends of Rock passed thru all of the Agora's across the nation, the glory days of real rock and roll. I later married had twin boys and still today I have pictures of my twins as toddlers taken by Stacey Pantsios with Box Car Willie posing against the graffiti wall backstage of the original Agora on 24th St. I moved on to Radio, and built my career with the tools learned from those early years with Hank Loconti & Buddy Maver. Today, we have a full scale nationally syndicated radio station with a global audience where we often reference the Cleveland Agora, Hank Loconti and Rock and Roll music from '65 thru '85 from the Rock and Roll Capital of the World!

It was Henry, WMMS, Stanley Stepsis, Buddy, Arnie, Denny, Agency Recording during those years. They were the masters, the leaders of Rock & Roll, well before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and well before other promoters. Hank was a rock pioneer he was at the helm, Henry Loconti showed everyone in Cleveland how to master rock concerts whether they were small hall concerts or full scale outdoor concert series like the success of Legend Valley, with amazing artists, Todd Rundgren, Cheap Trick, The Cars, the Police, Bruce Springsteen, the Pretenders Southside Johnny, Artful Dodger and on and on and on!

Hank, & Buddy changed my life and the face of music across the nation. Hank was the visionary that lead the charge and paved the way and Buddy drove it home! During those years way before MTV Hank , Buddy, Arnie, Denny magically introduced the "OnStage at the Agora" another pioneer first for Hank, Buddy and Cleveland.
Looking back, working for Henry LoConti was a privilege and an honor and to Hank and his family I send my heartfelt condolence. I am eternally grateful to Henry for his generosity and infectious passion for rock which fell into my heart the very first time we met.

This is a huge loss for our great city Cleveland.....We all of us stand on the shoulders of giants. The Giant is Henry LoConti he paved the way for Cleveland to become the Rock and Roll Capital of the World!
Godspeed Hank, Thank You!
from the bottom of my heart,
Chris Krause
